    • Brown is the first quarter of the moon. (when fruiting vegetables are sown).
    • Pink is a full moon. (when root crops are sown).
    • Blue is the last quarter of the moon. (reserved for maintenance activities).
  • When an activity has been completed, a red marker is added at the beginning of the row describing that activity.
  • You can see how far planting has progressed from the position of the last activity highlighted in red.
The chart was developed to achieve the following outcomes.
  • It indicates when seeds should be sown and cuttings planted so they are ready when needed in the garden (especially the veggie garden).
  • It keeps track of progress so no sowing or planting is overlooked.
  • Adjustments are made to the timing of seedling propagation to cope with shifts in weather patterns and to make sure sowings are synchronised with soil preparation.
  • The chart is constantly being improved and the changes recorded.
  • The altered chart is copied and used as the basis for the following year's plan.   (moon phase dates 2018).
  • As we enter a new year, the chart is modified so that crops are grown in the next Ecobed in the 4 year crop rotation. (e.g.  Crops grown in Ecobed 1 in the current year will be grown in Ecobed 2 in the following year).
  • Most of the crops listed in the chart are hyperlinked to the appropriate page in this blog.  By clicking on any of these vegetables (text highlighted in orange) you can access a page devoted to growing that particular vegetable.
  • This is a continuous improvement approach to gardening which has worked well for me over the years.
Note*. I am a great admirer of the complexity of nature, and I know that gardeners from antiquity have used the moon as a guide to plant their crops. Many organic gardeners and biodynamic farmers use more complicated versions involving the zodiac and other factors, and my efforts are less complex than theirs, but I use it mainly to arrange my planting schedule and my annual crop rotation. I'm not sure germination and ongoing plant growth benefits much from this procedure but I am very happy with the results anyway.
